Ignatius Yeo (b. 19x9)
Is largely a self-developed visual artist who fell in love with ink-wash approach in minimalist style. His works exude a strong blend in fusing Eastern-Western styles and approach. Although his techniques may seem Western, it is predominantly Chinese brush painting in philosophy; of lines, strokes, tones, placement and positive-negative space for that dynamism and harmonic balance of all elements within his compositions.
Being the inquisitive and curious kind since young these traits trailed and haunted him into adulthood as he passionately artplores and artperiments with different media, techniques, tools/implements and bases for his artworks. In the 1990s, he would create a series of artworks with glow-in-the-dark materials and soldering of brass rods. He would not continued until 2016 when he created his most ambitious piece titled "Curiosity saves a giraffe". Two more pieces of curious giraffe theme are in the making. Completion date? Mid-2018. Update: "Curiosity saves a giraffe II" was completed sometime in Nov 2018 just in time for the Wildlife Art Society's 2nd exhibition. He decided not to proceed with the other piece due to a controlled item (acid) which he wanted to use to create a textile effect and he does not have the permit to buy it.
Guan Dao Pen Encounter:
In 2013, Ignatius was introduced to the humble folded pen a.k.a. cola pen. He would went on to re-define and refine this crude pen by pushing its limit beyond it being used widely for creative calligraphy and manuscript writing. His evolved folded pen is now a brush, multiple nib size pen and a palette knife rolled in one. Simply a flip. Voila! It's a brush and yet another flip, it's a pen! A slight tilt and your line width varies from 0.1mm to 10mm or even 20mm! He was to name it Guan Dao Pen due to its resemblance to the legendary general Guan Yu's (關羽) green dragon crescent jade blade (青龍偃月刀). These days Iggy uses extensively Guan Dao Pen for most of his paintings. Click here to view a selection of his Guan Dao Pen artworks and those of his Guan Dao Pen workshop participants. Yes, he has been conducting such workshops on a regular basis since 2015.
Pastel Nagomi Art Encounter:
Iggy stumbled upon this art form quite by accident. That was in March 2019 when he visited the exhibition of his artist friend Honey Khor held in Singapore. He was early and she was nowhere to be seen. There was this couple, Audrey and Steven, who were early too. Iggy struck up a conversation with them, and Audrey started her story on how she being a housewife-turned-artist got trained to be a certified Pastel Nagomi Art instructor and then a train-a-trainer. She is now a very sought-after Pastel Nagomi artist. Iggy was intrigued how therapeutic and calming this relaxing art form can give one. Yes, he needs calm and sanity. He needs inner peace. So begins a new phase of his journey into a new level of peace and calm. In May 2019 he started his instructive course with Audrey and managed to complete the course in about 2 weeks. Now he is waiting for the certification from the founder, Mr Hosoya Norikatsu as of Sep 2019.
